Hi ive been searching arround and have been getting conflicting information! >:(

Can i use fiberglass to construct an overflow box?

I currently have an acrylic one but need to move the overflow to the centre of the tank and it now needs to span a bracing bar.

I have got a few quotes for getting new parts cut out of acrylic but wondered if fibreglass was "reef safe"

I have some polymer resin that i have for my surfboard whould that be ok to use or do i need the epoxy kind?

any input will be greatly recieved ;D

You could build one yourself!! ;) I assume this is an external overflow. I don't know much about fiberglass, but I think they make fish holding tanks out of it for bass boats and such so, I do not see why it wouldn't work. I used acrylite from home depot that can be cut with a disposable blade. It is about $12 for a 28" x 24" sheet. Acrylite is GE plastics acrylic. Check my page at:

I just got this page up.  ;D

Thanks for the advice! and great links!

But the only stores that sell sheeting of any form if they have it in stock, or if i am there in the right season: sell PVC and not acrylic....

I have had no success with it yet, as it is too "brittle" to work with.

the last box was a diy job, but it cost $60 for the cut parts, one place even wanted $400 to make it! lol.

Just wondered if the resins are toxic to marine life?

And how much glass fibre to use, or something else like cotton wool. lol....

well i answered the question the best way i know how!

i gave it a go...... spent a couple of hours making a cardboard template and started to coat with fiberglass......first mix had too much hardener and nearly caught fire!!... finally covered the template but it looks like a neandertal did it....

Decided to give a pvc one a go tomorrow......
