Would be good idea to ask what fixture it is that he has before everyone says can't be used ..

To the OP, what brand and model fixture is it that you have ?

Ok, this is the exact fixture, I am positive it can be used for SW

Aqualight T5 Series Double Linear Strip Light > 30"

I was thinkin instead of running my Metal halide 9 hours a day, I could run two actinic bulbs with this fixture for about 3 hours before and after the halide, and have the halide on for about 7 hours.

    Looks fine to me Anthos
my T5 canopy is aluminum (OK its actually Aluminium, but I Americanised it for this post)

no rust issues on mine, there is mild oxidisation on areas where water and salt creep contact it (white dust)

As long as it's anodized (not painted) aluminum, I would go for it.

As for bulbs, the "plant and aquarium" bulbs at Lowes/HD are 5k bulbs, not quite the whiter bulb people usually use on reefs. No actinics.

3rd thing, I wouldn't run them the whole time your halide is off. These 2 bulbs will be too bright to simulate nighttime properly.

    From the Product description..

Think yer quite fine to use this fixture .. :)

As to bulbs I know Home depot by me (Both of em that I frequent) do not have any T5's that I would use on my FW tanks let alone a SW tank.

You could but unless your familiar with the brand, there no guarentee about the spectrum.

The only specialty bulbs I have ever seen homedepot carry are plant bulbs btw.

You got that at home depot!?!? If your home depot is carrying fixtures specifically for aquariums they may have some actinic bulbs.
