I have some plate corals and another unknown one to me. They are starting to sloth off their layer of translucent coating and exposing the white skeleton underneath. What should I do? Do I just let them be and see if they can regenerate or are they done for? This just happened overnight as I dose my tank with some calcium supplement and topped off with some RO water.... Anyone has any idea? I will add some pics tonight when I get off work if anyone interested in seeing what is happening to them.

of course we want to see pics. makes helping easier. you will prob need to give details regarding params , lighting and placement of the corals. but hopefully it all works out good for you.

Thanks. I sure hope it all works out well for me sooner than later. My water param has been controversial. Both my self and my LFS got trace on all readings except for nitrate. The got 20ppm 3 days ago and I've been getting around 80 to 100. I'm getting it tested by them again later today to verify. SG/Sal is at 1.024/32 according to the instant ocean hydrometer. Again, all was well until this morning after adding RO and Calcium supp to it last night. Hmmm....

its my understanding , the hard corals are less tolerant of high nitrates and param swings.

I see. Do you know if they ever grow back? Or does it just depends on the amount of damage and condition of them right now?

i think that would depend as you said, their condition. hopefully not too far gone. pics will definitely help with assessment. good luck vushnick

Should really get your salinity checked by a refractometer instead of the cheap plastic hydrometers that you can buy at fish stores for 10 bucks or less.
Also noticed that you seem to be dosing quite a bit with calcium.... whats your alkalinity at, as this will be affected and likely drop down a bit every time you add the calcium to your tank. Should also keep an eye on Magnesium, pH, temperature, etc while trying to keep any type of SPS/LPS. Really need some parameters to help you out at all.

What type of lighting/flow/filtration are you running?

And I'd definitely be doing something to try and reduce those nitrates (possibly some 20-30% water changes, a couple of times over the next several days).

I know. I'm new to this and It's kinda like one thing after another. Right now I'm just trying to get the nitrates leveled. Here are some pics. I'm keeping my temp at 79, pH is at 8.3, salinity is at 1.023 still. The first two are the ones I'm concerned about. The elegance I think is recovering and the last pic is something I want to link a name to. Thanks guys.
