Like the title says, was wondering if old of cheap t5 bulbs can cause cyano to grow? I've added more flow, cut feedings, and pwc weekly RO DI , cannot seem to get it to comepletely go away... Nitrates and phosphate read 0, running carbon, replacing everytime I do a water change, GFO, completely clean every piece of equipment involving the tank... Still it grows back and I siphon it everyday... I got four new ati bulbs suppose to be shipped in tomorrow, hope it works

Try chemi-clean also. i've used it a few times. no negative effects. so far. just make sure to follow directions and do a min. 20% water change after 48hrs of using it.

I feel like chemiclean is just a bandaid... I got to find what's causing this... Tank is almost two years old, never have had nitrate or phosphate problem... Then it seems like it popped up over night... It's so frustrating

I don't think old bulbs will CAUSE cyano, but it may help it along...

How old is your tank? Have you tested your nitrate levels?

It's good to consider chemiclean a bandaid and want to find the root of the problem...

Have you had anything die in your tank recently?

How is your flow? If you don't have enough flow, it can be an issue...

Sometimes cyano just happens... It happened in my tank once, when I got a bit of a bloom on the back glass... I vacuumed it all out and it has not reappeared since...

Tank had been running almost 2 years, with nitrates at or around 0 nearly the entire time. Never had an algae problem before. I had a clown goby disappear back around December of last year, but that's it with fish dieing. I do not think it's flow cause I have spots of it growing right on the fronts of koralia pumps where the flow is the hardest.

If your tank is 2 years old and you haven't change your bulbs, the color shift will definitely move to a spectrum that is favorable for cyano and other algaes. When you put your new bulbs in, make sure that you light acclimate because the intensity will be much greater.

I agree chemi clean is a band aid, i only used it as a last resort. I've used it maybe 3 times on one of my tanks in about 1.5 years. if someone has to use it every other month then there's definitely a problem that needs to be addressed.

I seem to get a cyano outbreak every 6 months. I've heard other say Chemi-Clean is a band-aid, but it works. It COMPLETELY clears out the cyano from my display tank. The cyano in my fuge seems to be untouched.

Much easier than trying to get it out manually, which would be near impossible.

I guess if it doesn't start to clear up I might have to use chemi clean. I'm gonna replace the bulbs, I got crappy ones in there now and got my ati bulbs in today. Hopefully that works, I've read a few times where that can make a difference...and I'm starting to beleive it... I don't get cyano until I replace the power compacts with T5s, unfortunately I bought really crappy deep blue bulbs, or at least I thought they were junk. One of the ATI is brighter then the other three put together.
