Just wanted to know if someone could clarify this for me. I have seen some people's setup includes a bottle of compressed gas....i'm assuming it's oxygen to re-oxygenate the water in the tank. My question is how would i gauge the level of oxygen in my water and determine if this is something i should be looking into :confused1

I think that the compresed gas that you are talking about is co2 (i think) and thats for a calcium reactor.

but there are test to see how much oxygen is in the water

What kind of tests?? i know water will get oxygen replenished with water changes and the microbubbles from my equiptment returning to my DT, but i was wondering if this is something that is required to be monitored?? I was informed that my tang swimming head on to a powerhead is a sign he's trying to move more oxygen past his gill plates....the reason for my question

Sure they can be measured I test mine monthly get a dissolved 0'2 test kit . I also us a Oxygen reactor to keep my dissolved 02 as close to total saturation as possible

Calcium reactors use carbon dioxide gas, this is used to lower pH inside the reactor and dissolve aragonite to release calcium. Using a protein skimmer in your system should provide enough oxygen for your organisms. Measuring pH and alkalinity will give you a sign if there is something wrong with CO2 or oxygen levels in your tank. Oxygen test kits can be difficult to use and aren't that accurate.

Tangs like flow and if its swimming into the flow of your powerhead this is nothing to be alarmed at.

the compressed gas is co2 for the reactor and the oxogen is measured with an orp probe I think

pH is measured in the CO2 reactor and in the effulent, ORP is the oxidative and reductive potential of the water. ORP is generally used when dosing ozone (ozone). Using a redox controller you can control how much ozone is added. ORP can tell you if the water is oxidized or reductive but this isn't an exact measure of oxygen.

I have an O2 test kit. I bought it when I was searching for the cause of fish deaths.
With no direct O2 generating device I was well over the min requirements for O2 actually over the NSW levels as well. I also turned off my skimmer for 48 hours to test then just for fun. I still remained above NSW levels

awesome, just wanted to know if i should be monitoring it and that answers it, i'll watch my PH and alk levels. Just a note my test as of last night was a PH 8.2 alk DKH 8, maybe 9 at best. always had problems getting my DKH above 9...
