Yeah.. everytime I get rid of it, it just comes right back. snails and crabs wont touch it. Everyone is saying my phosphates and everything else are too high but all my tests read zero. Maybe the api phos test is just not accurate. I was so excited my tank was cycled and spotless and was about to add coral when this ugly stuff exploded. This is a battle im losing terribly. Im skimming some nasty stuff out as well, but still it doesnt seem to slow this algae down a bit.

if your tank just got done cycling just give it a few weeks..right after the cycle you will go through some crazy algae blooms..in my experience..one day you'll look and the majority of it will be gone

looks like some crazy hairy bubble algae. Aint nothign to worry bout like irr said if it just got done cycling or if its fresh setup and still cycling then turn your lights off and it will retreat.

Your phosphates will test near/at zero because your algae is using all the excess up! Three things to get it under control:

    1) Feed less. Once every three days till it goes away. Don't worry the fish will be fine (Or inverts for that matter)

    2) Limit your light period per day - try cutting it in half for starters till it goes away.

    3) If it just that one piece of live rock - remove the whole thing.

    4) Add macro-algae. There are quite a few pretty ones that don't spread like wildfire. They will help absorb the floating organics in the water so the micro algae can't use them.
Try liveaquaria.com The maidens hair is nice, so are the shaving brushes. I've got a nice strand of kelp in the tank to help out as well - best thing is most herbivores won't touch them.

    Oops thats 4 :)

Good luck! I wish I had that rock, my goby would be in heaven!

looks like lyngbya semiplena, a type of a cyano in the Littler book, but it kind of looks like Phormidium too. Google images was not helpful in either case...
