Most tanks that size do well at the standard 600gph (1 inch) overflow. Your going to want a return around that. Rio 2500 is what I have with my 600gph overflow. Works well for me. no problems yet.

bio balls are not needed. If you really want them, your supposed to rinse them in saltwater, not clean them. Replace them with chaeto and macroalgae. Most reefers are against bio balls because they allow nitrates to build up. Live rock, live sand, and macroalgaes along with water changes will filter your tank.

You will be upgrading on that protein skimmer in about a year and a half or less. Not a good skimmer.

Agree with all except that I typically use one size smaller return line than my drain line. For example, a 1 inch drain gets a 3/4 inch return. Also, I prefer the Reef Octopus skimmers. Good quality and a good price point.

Sell your filter, stock lights and bioballs. 2 24" t5s would not be cheaper than 1 48". I would get a 4 bulb T5 setup. It is not going to be cheap, expect to spend at least $200. If you are on a major budget, try to find some used 48 power compacts from craigslist or local reef clubs. Those should be ok for some softies. Lighting and skimming is the usually the most expensive of everything in a setup and people usually do not settle on whats cheap. I am a cheapo, but regret it everytime. I always wish I would've saved the money up for something better.
