Okay, this is stupid but I gotta ask: Is the "dry side" of a Vortech waterproof/submersible? I was wondering if I could mount one on my overflow.

The overflow is on one end of the tank - it's a peninsula setup. I don't think I can put a Vortech on the OTHER end, because then it'll make noisy waterfalls into the overflow.

Aside from that, the dry side is not even water resistant. I don't think mounting them on the other end would be too big a problem, other than cords hanging down. Even if you did mount it on the overflow end, after the waves go one way they have to come back and would still hit the overflow causing noise.

Have you looked at Tunze wave boxes? they are fully submersable and seem to me to be more suited for making realistic waves.

Yeah, space is not an issue, but water resistance certainly is. And surface waves would be a problem, the way I built this thing.

The Ecotechs do a lot more than just wake waves though. they're two random modes: reef crest and lagoon random. These modes are great for creating the random chaotic flow that corals like without producing waves.

I like the tide pool look of your tank by the way. Full tank shots?

These are a little outdated; I've cleaned up that powerhead cord and concealed it up under the rim and around to the other end.

I like what you're saying about the ecotechs. No surface waves in those modes, huh? I'm running a mag 7 return on this, and the overflow is stone cold silent. I'd like to keep it that way!

Looks amazing. Yes in reef crest mode it ramps up and down at random intervals to simulate random flow. In lagoon mode it does the same but goes up and down slower for a less chaotic feel. Reef crest mode is pretty close to a surge tank.
