Do a Herbie overflow. Completely silent and no bubbles in the sump. I put my stuff on the other side of the wall in a closet. Can't tell you how nice it is not have to get under the tank. Plenty of room. Both rooms are silent.

I wish I could do that. I asked the wike when we built to do it like this and she said no. So now I am trying to make it work!

For the pump to the tank, add one way valves. That way if you have to turn it off or detach the pump you wont get a 10 foot surge of water lol. Yea I understand it wont siphon out the tank and the pipe is probably not going to hold that MUCH water but that's my input.

I will have valves on all the lines in and out always have and always will. I once talked to a guy at a lfs he said you dont need any valves because once you hook the hoses up your not going to disconnect. Haha I am glad I put them on as I have needed every one of them at one time or another. I will be using gate valves when I change it all over from the ball style I currently have on there. I am also going to get one of those cool 4output style pvc parts I have seen scott and the skimmer build thread use. I am planning the whole thing out and have picked out my pump and am adding a new skimmer at the time to a 1 model up from mu bullet 2 going to a bullet 3. I will also be making a much larger refugium at the same time. Once I have the design down ill post some pics to see how it will work. I think I have it now and have the prices of the parts I just need to draw it out.

So what it her objection to it? If it is the returns, I don't even notice mine. Plus I like them better than the line lock coming out of the overflow. Just a nozzle in the water.

Also, just understand ball valves are quick acting. 1/4 turn valves that give no flow loss at 100% open. If all you need is isolation, I would still use ball valves. They are not inferior to gates. Depends on the application. If you want flow control off the return pump, A gate is suited better for flow.

Actually, gates are not "intended" for flow control. The are gates. Globes are better for that. But they do have much better throttling characteristics than balls and for out application work much better for that. Balls take up much less room and cost a lot less.

What ever shelf you are thinking of setting the sump on, make sure you have calculated the total weight of water volume and secure the shelf with good bracing. You may have already thought of this but in case not........
