Well I for one know it can be done , I have over skimmed a few times and have seen others to do the same thing . I have had skimmers that would pull the salt out of the water damn near add a 5ml of something and in 5 mins it was in the skimmer , That includes the food stuff coral naturally eat and feed upon in your tanks ..
I ran a older version to what they now call the ETSS 2000xr I had it on a little over a 1,300 system and Corals kept RTN and the LPS would stop growing and start to recede from the skeleton and softs just wilted in a week or less . Cut the skimmer back as low and slow as it would go still a little much dropped down to a 1400 and tank ran great from there on out ran for several yrs sps head as large as turkey platters and lps looked like water melon size , Like us trying to live off of pure oxygen its to pure for long term as are a huge skimmer you can over skim ,

I under size y skimmer by a % of their rating like the 200 gallon I had I had a bullet 3 way to much dropped off to a bullet one and system was fine now on the 90 I have that bullet 1 cut back to almost off still rocking

thank you. the reason i was asking was because i had heard that was possible and was trying to get second opinion. guess im leaving the remora in the basement with the current fission 250.

So then if a skimmer removes too much food, then how will over feeding, or just turning of the skimmer for a feed period not fix that? While it is quite hard to argue ones experience, the trend it seems is for everyone to throw a huge skimmer on a mall tank. Not saying that is a great practice, but tons of folks have oversized skimmers and thriving tanks.

I'm too lazy to turn mine off. It will skim cyclopeze and even Phyto. But I just feed more. At night If I feed rotties or oyster eggs, I will turn it off for an hour and turn down the powerhead.

There are others that run 100 micron filter socks. My question would be, if it is removing dissolved and some solid organics, how is that different than also running GAC and filter socks. In my experience, the skimmer will only skim what is there, and that isn't 100% of organics. That bigger skimmers do not remove more, they just add more head room.

What is the 150 and 250 rated for, and why do you need both on a 130g? They may pull out a lot, but do they both produce 100% of the time?

like most other solutions in this hobby it just depends on how your tank and livestock look in the endgame. if you have 2 skimmers and they are both pulling out dark crud and your tank and parameters look good then maybe add the other skimmer and keep an eye on your tank for the next few weeks and adjust accordingly.
