    I know I've read several times to open a window to raise the ph. the ph in my tank has been around 8.2, I had my office window open all day and it spiked up to about 8.6

    Is this normal for it to jump that much?

    Forgive the ignorance just getting educated.

    It's not normal for it to jump that much at once, unless your office had a higher than baseline concentration of CO2 in the air, which it kinda did. I'm fairly sure that 8.6 is on the high end of reasonable if it's a steady pH though.

    co2 lowers your ph so that wouldn't make any sense

    Co2 can dissolve into water creating carbonic acid:

    Co2 + H20 <--> H2Co3

    hence lowering the pH

    Ahem:

    He opened the window instead of leaving it closed. This would take any buildup of CO2 in the office from low air circulation and readjust the concentrations of O2 and CO2 to match the outside air levels. The O2 concentration would rise, CO2 concentration would fall, and the pH would rise in the relative spike he saw.

    Your point would still be perfectly valid if CO2 went up, but it did not. It went down.

    All I know is that my ph went through the roof today from testing yesterday.

    I need to get a more comprehensive test kit, nitrates are zero nitrites are zero but I do have a little ammonia.
