My candy cane has had its mouth open for a few days now for the bulk of the day when the lights are on. When I come in the room in the morning to turn the light on, I can see that overnight it closes it's mouth but reopens it soon after the lights come on.

Do you target feed them? What kind of supplements do you add to your tank? And do you every see their tenticles when it is open?

I do target feed about every other day with mysis or brine. phyto-plex and purple up.

No tentacles are not out, but I'm wondering if it's not being irritated by my goby constantly dropping sand on it.

That could possibly be the reason. Its anticipating its next meal. I have seen mushrooms do it. They will be open all day then right before lights go out when its feeding time they would cup up halfway anticipating food then when they're done and lights are out they open right back up.

You could also try placing it in a different spot so the goby doesn't get sand on it. I would fear getting the sand in the open mouth of it. Could be harmful.

that's kind of what I was thinking, In another thread I noted that it's been kind of oval shapes and the mouth has seemed wider than normal so I was speculating that it might be near splitting, do they need extra nourishment for this period?

I just need to find another good location, but that was my fear as well that it's literally getting a mouthful of sand.

They form another mouth before splitting. They do just fine with the nourishment they get, no extra needed.
