Right now I have a 60g FOWLR and have started to add some corals in the tank. I have a Rena XP3 canister filter and want to add a sump tank. I see that there is filteration in the sump tanks, can I just have it to place my heater, skimmer and filter inlet and outlet tubes? I also want to increase my water volume. Please let me know if that is possible, or if I need to get rid of the canister filter completly.

    Thanks

I started with an overflow box and some damsels, added a protein skimmer, canister filter and now run a sump as well.
The sump has a place for the protein skimmer (heater is too long), has a refugium with cheato in it and a return area.
I keep the canister filter for a screen filter and water movement (acts like a powerhead as well) and I keep the overflow box for a place to add my carbon and phosperous charcoal stuff. Plus if I need a quarantine tank I can take out 10 gallons of water from my 72 bowfront and 26 gallon sump, put that in the 10 gallon tank and move the overflow box with the bio wheels for bacteria in the quarentine tank.

It does have redundancies but I add 3/4 gallon of ro/di water a day and some supplements 2x a week and all my perameters stay perfect. I haven't done a water change in awhile and the tank is crystal clear, I used to have brown algae grow on the glass but I haven't used the magnet scapers in weeks.
The big kickers is pure ro/di water and the sump with cheato which really turned the tide. The other filters just add water movement and provide different types of filtering for my needs -- really what you need/want to do with it.
