Hello, yes i have read the threads and understand the nitrate issue and how much better sump setups are. But. I do not have a overflow and i need a new pumps ASAP

Im trying to get an idea of what people are running and what the best canister filter is for a 50 gal.

That's a pretty dope tank you got there, nice set up.

    1. Why do you want a canister filter?! What's your thought process behind it?
    2. Just a suggestion, lower you lights, in the video they seemed to be like over a foot about the tank, shoot for 9-12 inches tops.
    3. Please tell me your using RODI water and not straight tap!

There is nothing inferior about a canister filter, they do a great job,the key is not slacking on regular maintenance.I use a jbj reaction 4 stage with a built in uv light on my 55,works great. The bad rap that canisters get mostly comes from folks who do not keep them clean. They allow it to become a part of the biological filtration, then when they do clean them,it upsets things and can creat ammonia spikes or mini-cycles.

The reasons people prefer sumps is for greater water volume and a place to hide alot of the gear making for less maintenance and many like to use a portion of thier sump for a refugium for further nutrient export and a safe place for pods to breed.

With clowns a fire fish and a cardinal, I doubt he'll need a huge population on pods, and a skimmer is pretty much all he needs, that's all I have and my tank is awesome, absolutely no NEED for a canister. Just more maintenance, and your right, if you miss a scheduled cleaning, you'll mini cycle your tank. There's a reason that canisters arnt mainstream in the hobby anymore. Just sayin

    Yes,it's called lazyness.;)

Edit-I would like to add that i'm not saying at all that canisters are better than sump/fuges,i'm just saying they are a good sorce of filtration when properly maintained.

Been using a Fluval305 for about six years without a problem, like they say,its all in the maintenance. It's also good advise not to depend on it for your biological filtration, your live rock and good flow should accomplish that. BTW, my tank is a 44corner with little room beneath it for a sump, other wise I would like the advantages that a sump/refugium would offer.

If cleaned properly,i.e. using tank water(from water change)to rinse any media that is to be reused there will be little bacteria loss and no minicycle.
