I want a sump but dont have one. So for now i have a marine land canister filter. How good is that for filtering? I cleaned it last night and it was dirty!! I didnt clean the bio balls though. Good or bad?? This is on my 55gal fowlr.

your tanks nitrates are the most significant answer to your question
less than 10ppm good , more than 10ppm - consider cleaning them bio balls

A refugium would be even better, but thats just me. I dont like canisters, too much work. You shouldnt touch the BB unless they are really dirty. IMO, anything above 80ppm of No3 is not in the right direction. I had 20ppm for yrs without any issues.

You will need to have a DSB in the refug, either with LS or Mud. I have about 4"-5" of mud bed. Some Macroalgae and a good skimmer. I like refugiums better b/c its all natural and just about maint. free and they export No3 and Po4 better than anything else. Heres a pic of my sump/refugium......

I run a Fluval 305 on my 55, clean the foam filter every 2 weeks, Nitrates are always 10ppm or lower. But I have a fish only tank.
