Does anyone use a canister, or other type of external filter every so often to clean up the water?

eh... I think most people use a skimmer and live rock. But there are still plenty that use a canister.

IMO, they are unnecessary. I only run LR and skimmer on my 55. No sump, no refuge, nothing like that. Just keeping it simple.

Peredhil, so you have a straight overflow to a tank.. with just as skimmer and a pump in it? no partitions? just wondering because I am trying to figure out my sump situation as well

No. I have an HOB skimmer and my LR is in my display. That's it.

if you have a pre drilled tank, a sump/fuge combo with an in-sump skimmer would be your best bet. canisters work if a sump is not an option, but with a predrilled tank i think you would be doing more harm then good. Canisters will add lots of nitrates to your water unless you are very diligent about keeping them clean. build your own sump/fuge for cheap and spend your money on a good skimmer.

They sell caps (but if my tank were drilled, I'd take advantage ;))
