    Alot of people don't have bio-balls, but I think they are better than nothing. Good biological filtration, can't hurt.

    Yeah, they prefer lots of LR But I think even base rock is definatly some $$$ compared to bio-balls.

    Bio-balls can't be beat for what they do best. Period. Nothing beats them for converting ammonia to nitrate. The main issue with them is converting nitrate to nitrogen gas. Put the two together and you have an incredible filtration system that doesn't use live rock at all. And if the nitrate handling part is done right, it will do better than live rock and what you end up with is a more efficient system than live rock without the cost of the rock.
