Have a 55 gallon tank with a emporer 400 now. I'm looking into getting a canister filter and wanted some input on good brand names. Something that isn't going to bust and put 55 gallons of water onto my carpet...

So far I have found a like new Rena Filstar Xp4 for about $150...is this a good value?

Like I said im only worried about the filter malfunctioning and spilling water all over when im at work. What are some reliable canister filters for a 55 gallon? Thanks

Like: Fluval, Hagan, Eheim, Jebo, Odyssea, Cascade, ect. anyone can attest to any of these products?

over the years I have used Fluval, Ehiem and Rena and in all honesty never been dissapointed with any of them

what are you aiming to use the cannister for? I assume salt water and I assume you are sumpless?

if its a typical reef set up, you will probably have adequate rockwork/ sand etc to provide a home for the bacteria you need

but for chemical media on a sumpless system, I have found them to be a reasonable option

I just put a Fluval 305 on my 40 Breeder planted tank. I must say it's the best canister filter I've ever dealt with. Some can be a real pain. This one has a cool priming pump, and it is literally silent when it gets running. It also has a shut off valve to control the flow and completely seal off the tubing when you're doing maintenance on the filter so you don't get any water on the floor. They run around $170.

I have a Rena XP 3 on my turtle tank and an XP 2 (for chemical filtration) on my Reef. I'd say they're a fine brand and I'd defiantly recommend them.

I have a marineland C-360 on a full stock reef setup! I have had no problems with it and its very quiet. One think to keep in mind with a canister is that you can see what is going on inside. When you have a sump its easy to see algae, bacteria, plus its easy to add chemicals too! I do like the flexibility and ability to move it around if need be. To be honest they are goo bang for you buck, but I would recommend buying off brand media instead of buying from marineland. I give mine a 8.5/10 if that helps

Yes I have salt water. And I do not have a sump. Im basically looking for something so I can eventually remove the emporer 400 from the back of my tank. I need something rated for a 55 gallon tank and is reliable.

You running a skimmer? a quality HOB skimmer added to your tank
and a gradual removal of the media in the Penguin (25% a week over 4 weeks) and you will be able to wean your tank off the need for that alternative location for bacteria

how much rock you got in the 55?

I agree with Steve. If you have enough rock and a skimmer, a canister filter is unnecessary.

+1 a good quality skimmer like a Deltec or Bermuda Rogue is all you need if you have enough rockwork for bio filtration. I run the Deltec MCE600 hob on my 55g reef, it's amazing, I know Steve also has a few. It's very pricey but it's absolutely worth it IMO, it will be the last skimmer I will ever need.
