Canister filters?

    I am in the process of building a 20g long sump/fuge for my 55g. Could I use a canister along with the 20 long for mechanical filtration, or will this just be a waist?

    The 20g long will have 3 chambers. Skimmer, fuge, and return chamber.

    About the only thing I would use a canister for would be to run carbon in it. Or you could add some live rock rubble in there. They can be pretty good filters if you keep them clean But if detritus accumulates in the filter it will produce nitrates. I don't think it would be necessary.
