For my 65g I am building I have a canopy made out of oak with 2 175w halides plus some t5s. My ballast are on top of the canopy and I have also made a control panel with my rkl controller, mp40 controller and my switch panel. All of this adds up quick and it is almost impossible to remove the canopy by myself seeing that it is pretty heavy and awkward.
Is there a max weight that should be sitting ontop of the tank?

The tanks can handle a lot of weight, I don't think you will have any problem. If it has a decorative strip it will absorb some of the pressure and spread it out more evenly.

2in10 is correct. they can carry tremendous weight as long as they dont move, think about it. if the glass was lets say half inch thick that could support alot of weight, the glass uses its height to this advantage so its as if its resting on 24 inches of glass which is quite strong, but this is only if the base and stand are secure, if the thing sways it could buckle under pressure, the tank can support imense weight but make sure the stand and bottom are properly stable so they wont move.
