shooting through glass you have to be almost head-on otherwise it gets distorted.

To get super close up pictures you will need a macro lens

Is it an SLR? If it is try putting it on manual focus. That is how I get me best photos.

This is the one OP has. So not an Slr.

nikon coolpix 10.1 - Google Search

My camera is pretty similar to this one though... I have the Nikon Coolpix P90

I'm not sure if our camera(s) will let us adjust the f/stop.

You can, but IME, I've always taken a lot of shots of the same thing, then go through them to find the best ones. Also, if you set your camera to the highest mexa pixel setting, you can get super close up shots by just cropping the picture. It should enlarge the cropped area. That's what I always do, but you will probably need a tripod so as they are not blury.

    Well said.

    For my camera,(nikon p90) here's what I do.

    Menu: Image quality > Fine
    Image Size : 12M (4000X3000)
    Noise Reduction: on
    Distortion Control: on

Settings on controls > flower/tulip symbol > down to flower. This setting is meant for macro or close up.

    Also use a tripod

Even pro photographers will take a million shots before they find the one they like. Just a few, maybe 1/3 to 1/4 will be "show quality".

    You're welcome.

I also squeegee my outside glass & clean the inside too before taking pictures. If there is something on the glass in the way, the camera will want to focus on it, rather than a fish or coral.
