Cant get the temp down. Do filters and pumps generate heat?

What the title says...

My temp is constantly at 84F degrees. I set the heater as low as 72F degrees and turned off the light since its night time now. Its still pretty high. Could it also be cause my room is quite warm? Its freezing outside right now.

 

i have plastic bottles filled w water and frozen , just float one in top of tank to slowly bring the temp down and yes lights and powerheads do generate a bit of heat , i only run my heater 5mths of the year as i have a stable temp of 24- 25 celsius

 

Technically anything that causes friction will cause heat so water moving quickly through the filter can cause heat but nothing noticeable. Now pumps can generate a ton of heat depending on how many you have and if one of them is going bad. If your at 84 check your thermometer and make sure it is never turning on. They can go bad over time as well. If that does not help get a chiller or a fan to speed up evaporation which will lower the temp. Just have top off water ready to go.

 

The tank is going to be at least 3-4 degrees higher than the ambient temperature of the room unless you are using a chiller or some type of evaporative cooling. As Jtreef said all the pumps and lighting adds heat and the setpoints on some heaters will drift over time...

Thanks for the responses guys. I really appreciate the advice. I have 4 built in wall heaters in my room (the kind that use hot water to radiate heat). As a result, my room is really hot. Didnt notice till i walked out to my car this morning and realized i forgot something. When i went back to my room, i had to take off my jacket immediately.

I turned off the 2 closest to the tank and turned the tank heater off as well. Im kinda scared since i did it this morning before leaving for work. Hopefully the temp wont drop too much while im gone. Ill keep you guys updated with my progress.

 

This is just my experience but eheims seem to generate more heat than most.

 

Do the Eheim mechanical & wet/dry filter affect water temp? Id assume they dont since they are outside/underneath the aquarium in the cabinet. I have a small Eheim powerhead in the tank itself to stir up the water. Its suction cupped to the glass, but its pretty small. My Tunze skimmer is also submerged in the display tank but its never affected the temp before. Could all this possibly be a result of the small Eheim powerhead?

I called home and had them check the thermometer again. Its still at around 82-84F. Thats with the room heaters off and the tank heater off as well. Crap...:-/

 

As JT said, ALL pumps add heat. Yes the Eheim adds heat.

 

Like everyone said, yes they do add heat. Evaporative cooling is very powerful. You should hook up a fan to blow across the water and help evap some. With it being winter it will work out good too since it will add a little moisture to the air.

Does the tank get any direct sunlight during the day either?

Try the fan. It should be a big help.

My aquarium has a lid. I took it off and i saw an immediate difference of 2F degrees. Im gonna wait a few more hours and let you know if it drops any more. All i need is 2F degrees more. The powerhead and the heater in the tank are still off. The aquarium doesnt get any direct sunlight, but the rest of the room gets decent amounts of it. Gets kinda hot in here during the day. Ill let you guys know how it develops. Thanks again
