Hey guys, i need help! i cant keep my snails in the tank!! I just got my cleanup crew early yesterday and I cant keep them from climbing out of the tank. Im not sure what is wrong?? My params are as follows: Amn 0, Nitrites 0, Nitrates 20ppm, PH 7.8-8.0 Temp 78-80 depending on if halides are on or not. I dont understand why they keep trying to crawl out. Is it because they are so new still or whats going on? How can I keep them in there???

is there algae for them to eat?

it may just be they are new. i had snails climb out after a down grade. you can try to stop it by lowering the water level if that posible

there is a TON of algae for them to eat in there. I cant lower the water level really. They just keep climbing to the top of the glass and out of the tank, darn little guys.

That has happened to me when i introduced my new snails into my tank, THey all made their way up the tank like it was a marathon. However, they only went to the top and at most a saw a couple on the ledge. Everything is normal now, they usually are only on the glass at night.

Well, what type of snails are they?

Certain species live in intertidal zones where they are in the air for a good portion of the day until the tide comes back in. This would be considered normal behavior.

It's probably not going to be an acclimation/acclimatization problem, food problem, or water quality problem. They may be just exploring, but my guess is that you got either nerites or littorinids, both of which spend a lot of time above the water line. Other than that fact, they are great algae eaters. Some nerites will STAY above the water line, however, waiting for the tide that never comes. If you have those, you'll have to keep punching them off into the water.

    Cheers,

    Don

Don, you are correct!! They are large nerites that are crawling out of the tank. I just got home from being gone for a few hours and none of them were out of the tank, they are all on the rocks or at the bottom of the glass, so maybe they figured it out. I also have quite a few dwarf ceriths that like to climb to the top of the glass also at night, but found that they buried themselves in the sand, so hoping that they have also figured out to stay in the tank.

after several months, I found my nerites don't do this nearly as often... I guess they learned...
