I have to be honest, I have ran loads of diesel eve dubs and spent very little on maintenance outside of the scheduled oil etc, the are also better when they get bigger miles on them, in fact the more miles the better they seem.

I have a 06 silverado that is about to be traded for a passat diesel for that very reason. At his age I'd imagine insurance payments of $250 a month. That is the trade off.

Now you're thinkin'. I loved my Truck in high school. '85 F-150. Got maybe 9mpg and had two 20g fuel tanks. I used to go into gas stations and hand them hundred dollar bills to buy gas just to watch their reactions. Very reliable truck.

The operating cost in fuel and repair alone on a dodge is going to be = 295 a month... Dodge don't do well after 100k miles. 150k on a dodge truck is at the end of the line. But, you can use the dodge for now, and then trade it in when it starts acting funny.

But all in all. the fuel savings alone are probable enough to cover that payment.

    < Toyota scion dealer.

There is no way. Usually 16 year olds in a scion would be closer to 250 every 6 months. His parents will be considered the primary driver to lower the risk. And it's a 4cyl with a back seat, it's not a high risk car.

It sounds like you're pretty certain already, but...assume for a minute that gas went up to $5/gal (I hope not)

It does seem pretty simple, do the math. If you drive 20 miles a day, 6 days a week, and gas went up to $5, you'll spend $225 per month on gas. Insurance - can go with just the basic insurance.

Compare that with a new car
spending $5000 of your own money (+$5000 gift?),
    + $300/mo car payment
+ full insurance, probably sky high (they only care about your age, not your driving reputation)
+ (worst case, 30mpg, $5/gal, $90 for gas for the month)...

Many are concerned about the environment and mileage, but it still takes plenty of energy/resources to create a new car and recycle an old car.

Sounds like you have a great option, though... I had to drive a 4 door brown Mercury Grand Marquis...I'd have loved a truck ;D !
