Insurance won't be bad. He should be under his parents umbrella and only considered a secondary driver. Scion's are extremely insurable.

As the owner of 2 TDI Jettas I have to agree that they are great, however they are not cheap to buy even used as they have an extrememly high resale value. As a teen, you don't want a high payment. I think the biggest mistake young people make is running out and getting a car just because they think it's cool. There is so much more that they can do with that money. College isn't cheap!

OK, Unless this kid is gonna drive 2000 miles a month, theres noway he'll cover the car payment.

Unless the household has less insured cars than drivers, he'll prob have to be a primary on one of them, and even then, $250 every 6 months seems INSANELY cheap for a 16 year old as a primary driver.

Zach, keep the truck, get a blow up mattress, and truck bed tent cover, and be that guy with a truck. Everyone likes the guy with the truck. Especially at parties in the backwoods.IMO

Insurance is different in every state, but that's not an uncommon price in my dealership for insurance on a scion for a secondary driver.

Like I said, keep the truck as long as it lasts well, but I doubt he can cover the cost of repairs, so when it acts up then get the car. The gas isn't the issue imo, it's the mechanical.

I would go with a newer more fuel efficient car. My parents bought me a salvaged SUV when I was 17 and this was when gas was crazy expensive and I was getting like 13 mpg. So when I turned 21, I decided to sell it and get something more fuel efficient. Luckily I had been working and paying bills long enough. etc so my credit came out good at the dealership. I was paying 195 a mo. and 150 a mo. for insurance. I was still a full-time student and had a full-time job so the payments were doable. After having multiple break downs in an older car, there's no better feeling than driving a brand new, reliable car! I bought a Honda Fit btw, good gas mileage and has plenty of space for cargo. The $80 bucks I saved a week on gas, I put to my payments. I was paying like 25 bucks every 2 weeks for gas on the Honda, not anymore of course with gas being $5.25 now.

I'm sorry, it was more like $125. Yeah, the insurance doubled but that was only because I only had liability on the previous vehicle. I had to buy full coverage on the financed vehicle.
