Hey guys, I am about to turn 16 years old :party007: and I'm trying to convince my mother into buying me a car...

    Heres the situation:
I am currently getting my grandpa's 2004 dodge ram with a V8 hemi. The reason i would like a car is to get better gas mileage. Theres no way i could last with $5.00 gas prices. (which they will be when i get the truck).

My mother does not want to pay for insurance on two cars because she thinks it will be too expensive. So here are my questions...

Should i suck it up? and save money for the truck?
    Should i trade in?
Or how much would insurance be on two vehicles for a 16 year old with a B average?

I know this is way off topic, but i really want to convince my mom into getting me a fuel efficient car :-/ also any car recommendations will be good ;D

Do driver's Ed and that should help with your insurance rate as well. I believe State Farm has a discount for grades as well. If you get a car, don't get a sporty car because that will raise your insurance as well, and stay away from cars associated with street racing as they tend to be stolen a lot lol. Be a good defensive driver, and your rates should stay down.

Another thing you could do, is pay for it yourself. I had to do this when I was your age almost 16 years ago lol. Good luck to you.

A TON! IMO, accept your grandpas gift, pretty cool truck for a 16 year old! And if ya trade it in, you'll get crap for it! Insurance on 1 vehicle for a 16 year old is insane! Although it prob is cheaper for a car! If anything, sell the truck and buy a car! Never trade an old truck like that in, you'll get reemed!

go to progressive.com and find out how much insurance on that would cost verse a car you'd want!

I agree with the truck lol. You wont get what the truck is worth on a trade in, but depending on what part of IN you are in, you might be able to sell it out right. There is a lot of farm country out there. I'm from Anderson myself. Trucks can be fun in IN, and a lot of chicks love em lol. Gas prices will be an issue though.

yes, the chicks love the trucks. I have 50 kids in my graduating class so you can guess i live in a farm town. North west indiana. Right on the edge of country/city.

I do love the truck though, beautiful and taken care of amazingly. Its just gas prices, and the v8 on insurance... i don't really wanna sell it either because its nice for the winter. But if it would be cheaper than buying a cheap car good on gas, then ill suck it up?

lets say ya drive 5000 miles a year

    truck 15 mpg? = 333gallons at $4 = $1332 or $111 a month
    car 25 mpg? = 200 at $4 =$$800 or 67 a month

also check out several places and compare prices,we just run basic liability on both of our vehilcles (plus, been married for years (eternity :cheesy:) and both of us having good driving records have helped alot, but we switched to the geeko 3 years ago after we found out how bad our local agency was "sticking it to the man" for the same coverage.Plus they settled up very, very fast on a minor fender bender that wasn't our fault,we was actually hit by a 16 year old, lol.

we'll i think it will end up being like this.. lol
    truck 12 mpg (hemi,4x4, quad cab) 416 gallons a year @ $4.50(goin up) = $1872 a year or $156 a month.

    compared to a car 25 mpg at $4.50 = $75 a month

    thats a $81 difference.

Would insurance on a second car be cheaper than $81 a month possibly?
