I have a 40G and i was looking on brs and calculating how much carbon and gfo i would need to use in a reactor. it tells me to use 0.31 cups of gfo and 0.25 of ROX carbon.

is it even worth running them in a reactor ?

you can run them in media bags in high flow areas of the sump. some people might be contrary to running GFO in media bags due to it forming into a brick. Me personally I would run GFO in a reactor because you get more out of it. ROX carbon from BRS I run in a media bag because it's too small to run in a reactor and it's really good carbon so I don't see any need to force water through it. On my 55 gal I use about 1/3 cup carbon that I swap out every 3 weeks.

Both will work better in a reactor... and yes it is worth it.
I would recommend watching the videos on BRS.
The ROX is simply amazing. My ROX is not too small to run in the BRS brand reactor. None gets out.
GFO needs to have a light tumble.
If you put Carbon in a sock it will still work just not as fast.. which is ok depending on how you look at it. In a sock the middle carbon may never even get used much since it can't get much flow. I think it's best to just get a reactor and you'll be glad you did.
