Can anyone explain the difference between Carbon, Chemi-pure,and Purigen. I know Carbon lasts 2-4 weeks and the other 4-6 months. Are they mainly used for the same purpose. Do they mainly do the same thing, remove undesolved organics.

    Thanks for any clarification.

nailed it. exhaust period depends on water quality the "dirtier" the faster itll deplete.

    Carbon is well... carbon.

Chemi pure is a phosphate removing media, and the elite has some carbon in it.

not sure what Purigen is made from, as ive never used it.

But all will remove impurities in the water column resulting in lower nitrate and phospate levels. Just remember to change em when you see a change in the tank like more nutrients and what not. but every 3 weeks or so should be just fine.

Carbon is a organic adsorption media. Chemi-pure is a good carbon. It has some some de-ionizing resins, sort of like what you'd find in DI canister of an RO/DI filter. The resins work in fresh water, but are exhausted almost immediately in saltwater due to the ionic nature of saltwater. Chemi-pure elite is chemi-pure with added GFO. Purigen is a synthetic organic adsorption media (so, sort of a synthetic carbon) that turns color as it is exhausted (how accurate an indicator the color is, is anyone's guess), and it can be recharged by a process involving soaking in bleach and purigen.

I don't see how anyone can make that claim by the way. Chemi-pure is carbon, so, it can't last longer than carbon...

Carbon can last anywhere from a few hours to a few months depending on the the organic density in the water column.

Ken Feldman discuses GAC in these articles and difficulties of modelling carbon performance.

Purigen removes a greater range of dissolved organics than carbon or Chemi-Pure and last much longer since it has a great surface area.

Says who? Sea Chem? Maybe, it would be interesting to see independent testing though, but it does seem to work. It doesn't seem to work noticeably better than ROX 0.8 in my tanks though, but is a fine product.
