    Thank you John, its possible

if someone had not painted the back( side) and sides (front) of these tanks blue, he could try as you suggested

possibly more than 1 element at play here

when I swap around the media between the tanks later
it will be interesting to see if similar situation is repeated

D'oh, that's right LOL. Anyways though, you don't necessarily need to put the paper behind it. If you laminate the paper you could just stick it in the water. Or any white plastic would do. You could even use some PVC or something. As long as you use the same piece in each tank, should be fine as we are just interested in the color difference.

I agree, there could be a number of factors working together.

PVC sounds like a workable option for me
worth a try anyway thanks for the suggestion m2434

    Update

in the spirit of trying to keep all things as even as possible
added 1 mil of Brightwells Restor to each set up this morning
this product is a amino based supplement that helps repair damaged coral tissue and can help in cases of bleaching
I have used this before for LPS corals that faded in my reef tank
and want to try and get all the corals back to full health prior to swapping methods around later

Not sure if this will work

    Kent carbon lid used
I might need some assistance with this someone to ensure images are always at same distance - I held the lid against the light unit, so it was always same distance from front glass, but doing this single handed, means camera distance may have varied

That should work. The more things are held consistent, the better though. Also, if there is a way to post the RAW files, that would be better, but we can get an idea from the jpgs if that's what's available.

How does this sound for comparison?

We could do this with a number of software programs. I have one called PixInsight, which is a very powerful, quantitative image processing package designed for astrophotography. The benefit to it, is is has a lot of pixel math features.

So, first, I see the cap has a little dimple in the center. That's perfect. I can use the dynamic crop tool, to line up the curser to the dimple, then create, say a 100 x 100 pixel crop around it.

    Then crop, leaving ->

Then I can get the RGB pixel statistics for that area, from each image and compare using the mean and standard deviation for the 3 colors respectively, compared to each other image.

    Update

during mail discussions with m2434 , who is helping us analyze the water clarity based on images in raw TIF format that I am sending

1 aspect discussed was to ensure the blue side wall, being equally clean in order that they reflect to the same degree

so yesterday I had hoped to clean all 4 tanks and take images

tanks where cleaned from left to right

this image was taken 20 minutes or so after the cleaning

The Vodka tank, seemed to have a bacterial bloom

m2434- has shared his theories on this with me, and I hope he will contribute those on here (rather than me quoting him)

the tank was still cloudy 10 hours later - no Vodka dosing done yesterday for this reason and tank cleared up overnight

new images taken and sent to m2434 today

none of the other 3 tanks, reacted in this way, to the overall glass cleaning exercise

Vodka dosing at 0.3 mils resumed today

This is one of the best, most informative experiments that I've read in a forum. Very well conducted and on a subject that is not widely understood (particularly the Biopellets). I've read every post, and many twice.

Bulk Reef Supply should be paying you - as you've just made them a reactor/biopellet sale.

    Well done.

    Update today
    [IMG]

after just over a week in the pellet maintained set up
    that rock is much improved

I have not manually removed any and yet it seems to be decreasing in quantity and also losing coloration

maybe I have a pair of super Astrea snails in that set up?
If that is the case, they will be upgraded to the 5ft before very long
