Basically just a canister or tube of some sort you can put some sort of media in to pump water through and get a good flow through the media (carbon or GFO or some other phosphate remover etc).

    That's it. :)

It's a chamber that situates media in such a way that water is forced through the media.

Using bags of media such as in the sump, or under the outlet of the protein skimmer is better than nothing, but it's passive. Some water will contact the media, most won't.

With a reactor, you are actively running water thru that media. A phosphate reactor depends upon this principle.

    There's no comparison. :)

Nice, a very well thought out and descriptive explanation.
I may have to invest in a reactor (or equivalent) for with multiple chambers....

    Thank you....;D

I run this one and yet to give me trouble. I have it in the sump next to the skimmer.

I use the Pentair canister - just like the phosban reactor. I have three of them tied together in line and using one pump -- works great. I don't think you are getting enough benefit from the carbon if you fail to force water through it.

I also use one carbon bag under my skimmer return because I feed Ozone into the skimmer....

Nice post- I have always had the same question. I too had mine under the exit piping for the skimmer.
