I want to eliminate my power filter but some say carbon is a must and others say with good live rock carbon isnt needed. If I take out my power filter and tear the filters apart and take the carbon out and bag ((bag as in maybe an old fish net taken off the handle and the top tied shut)) it up can I put it in the bottom of my reaction chamber on my protien skimmer and get the same carbon affect?

I dont' understand why someone would say if you have enough lr, you don't need to run carbon. Lr is biological filtration while carbon is chemical, they perform completely different tasks. I would highly recommend running carbon. You need to put the carbon where there is enough flow. The skimmer idea isn't bad, I just don't know how it will affect the skimmer's performance. Also, just get a media bag instead of using a net, they are cheap and are designed for that purpose.

If I don't run carbon I can tell after about a week the water starts to smell. With carbon no smell. And it takes out whatever chemical warfare may be gong on.

I just got today Chemi Pure Carbon. I had Marineland but the LFS likes this one better. I use it in a HOB with a separate Phosban media and it works well. I feel you should use as much carbon depending on how much livestock you have and the type of livestock. I use about 1/2 cup in a bag

I use Chemi Pure Elite in place of straight carbon and it works great. Plus it comes in a bag alredy. They last 3 to 4 months and then you replace them. Cost around $20. I use two in my wet/dry. I just placed them on top of my bioballs under the tray. Quick and easy.
