My green carpet anemone is in a refugium in my 55 gallon reef tank. The refugium is actually inside the main tank and it's angled so that only the clownfish can swim in and out of the main tank and the refugium to get to their host anemone.

My question is, I aquired the anemone through someone that was breaking down their 250 gallon reef tank and the anemone was loose to go wherever in that tank. I once let it loose in my 55 gallon reef and it ate a firefish, a clown goby, and 3 chromis. I know it's not safe to let it loose in the tank I have now, but I will soon be upgrading to a 150 gallon tank. Will it be safe to roam anywhere in that tank without me having to worry about it eating my fish?

It is my understanding that if they catch it they will eat it regardless of tank size. The only difference is the fish have a larger capacity of tank to stay away from it. It really is a gamble as carpet anemones seem pretty good at catching fish :).

On the plus side great job keeping it happy they are hard to maintain for long periods of time. I did some research and it seems most places recommend 50+ for a green carpet anemone.

Yeah, it's like 6 inches away from the MH. It is in a 4 or 5 gallon refugium (which isn't really a refugium, but a "kritter keeper") that's inside of the main tank. Sort of hard to explain, but I will try and get some pics. It has been doing fine since november. There's a powerhead in there with it. It got shredded by the pump 2 months ago but fully recovered. It actually looks more vibrant since it regrew its tentacles. I had to put a mesh casing over the pump so it wouldn't shred the anemone again and seems to be working. I feed it twice a week. It has been hosting the clownfish for years, ever since I got them. They really aren't that much maitnence as long as the water quality is good and it doesn't eat any of the fish..
I'm still trying to decide if I should keep it in the "refugium" in the main tank when I upgrade to the 150 gallon or let it roam free...

In our system, the carpet anemone is "anchored" in place...I dug a hole in the gravel, set the base(foot) of the anemone in the hole and back filled the hole... for 2 months now it has not moved. We do worry about the fish that seem to swim so close to it...someone is likely to become dinner...we feed whole "cocktail" shrimp or scallops 2x/week...

A happy anemone shouldn't move too much. I may move once place, but it should find a spot it likes, if it can, and stay there. It may be that you either didn't give it enough time to find a spot it likes or there wasn't a spot it liked.
