Near the end of the month I'm going to be adding some small well known jumpers a firefish and a wrasse to my tank. I was wondering if egg crate would be acceptable for a tank cover. I also have some lps in the tank and don't want to block the light. Will this be a problem?

I hear egg crate blocks too much light sometimes. bulkreefsupply.com has a 1/4 inch mesh that works well. I use it and it has saved me a lot of times.

The mesh that bulk reef supply has would probably be the best it has a little more transparency to it.

Egg crate has holes that I hear are too big.

I'm assuming that's what happened with my firefish when he went missing. Never was found :(

really? I have some I can barely fit my pinky in. I'll look at the mesh stuff. I already ordered the fish and have them set to be delivered the day after thanksgiving. I had to go that route, the customer service in my area is terrible.

The holes in eggcrate are in fact too big for those small fish. If the head fits, they'll go right through.

You want a 1/4" clear mesh top, as stated.

I have tried both, and I can assure you that egg crate does block some light. I mean if its enough to be visible to me without my glasses on then your coral definitely know it. Plus the egg crate isnt all that on the eyes either. White and it glowed bright off my T5 lights, and the black looks like crap with a little bit of salt creep or dust. Plus based off expereince a firefish can fit thru the holes.

The BRS mesh is the way to go.

+1000000 on making a DIY top with the BRS mesh.

You can def get all the materials you need (framing, frame corners, spline, spline roller) from Home Depot or Lowes and just get the 1/4 mesh via BulkReefSupply: Clear 1/4" Screen Netting 6.5' x 2.5' - English

I've made 2 so far, so easy to make, I stink at DIY and I found them very easy. They look super nice too & don't interfere with the lighting.
