So I go out quite often to cast net for shrimp and fish. Some of the shrimp we eat, most is used for bait and the tiny shrimp and fish become food for my tank inhabitants. I figured I would post up a thread of all the different critters I catch when I go out.

So here are some pictures from yesterday.

All of these are taken in the Hilton Head/Beaufort area in South Carolina.

Just thought some of ya'll might like to see this, I know I love going out and seeing all of the different animals native to my area. I have long been wanting to setup a native species tank, so maybe one day!

I am going out in the kayak today since the bait fish/shrimp are finally starting to make their way back here.

But here is a nice little squid I caught yesterday. It was very cool seeing him change his color and pattern in the bucket.

All of the larger fish/creatures are released after a photo op.

I will be sure to get better pictures from here on out.

That's cool looking stuff. I do wish I lived a bit closer to the coast

It is a lot of fun going out and seeing all the different things you can pull up.

I am going out on the kayak today so I will try and get some more pictures.

I used to get grass shrimp off the dock to feed to the filefish which was caught off the dock. That was after a hurricane 3 years ago, which brought some new species with it. It lasted a year and a half longer than if it stayed in the river, the blues weaks, or even the killies (yep tried them in the tank and they kicked it around). It fell to a case of ich.

    Chealy,

    That's awesome!

YES!, When I liven in TX, near Galveston and Galveston Bay, I would often cazst net for baitfish.
I also would castnet around Boynton Beach FL. when I lived across the street from a beach park- awesome snorkeling there! That's where I stated and had my native species DT- all hand caught, (mostly with a slurp gun while diving or snorkeling).
From memory (pics in the basement in a box somewhere), I had a real nice French Angel, a porcupine puffer, a few purple/yellow damsels, a stick fish, 2 clawed shrimp

One time in Galveston Bay the good big shrimp were being run up to the top by something, and we cast netted around 8 lbs of big nice shrimp in about 10 minutes! We kept almost all of those and ate those obviously!

    Nice thread topic thanks!

Todd when I used to live in texas I was always cast netting off the dock at my grand ma's beach house. Caught a lot of awesome fish there, we also used to go out of port o connor (sp?) every weekend when we lived in Victoria.

Man I sure do miss Texas, but South Carolina is nice.

I've live away 4 years now, and really starting to miss TX also.

Throwing a cast net correctly is a skill, isn't it?

I would see seasoned fishmen on the Jetties- various places, that could throw a cast net like they were casting a small fishing rod it seemed- highly skilled in that art.

The beauty of living by an ocean. My clean up crews are all from the ocean. My kids catch the snails and crabs and put them in a bucket when ever I can't go with them LOL. I found a shallow reef I like to visit when I go out there. Sometimes I feed the fish scallops they love it.
