I'm trying to catch my Sailfin, to give him a freshwater dip, and he's more elusive than I'd thought. Anyone have tips? Besides to have patience. Ive been trying for the last hr and a half.

why fw dip? Ick I assume? Are they eating ok? I personally would not move him for the FW dip, increase food, add HUFA, and give him some nori to munch on. However a FW dip is WAY too stressful and most often unnecessary.

I have to agree a sailfin is way too big for a 29g. That is probably why he has ick. I would find a new home for him if you do remove him

    Thanks for the reply. :)
Yes, it is Ich. What's HUFA? And I give him a 2x3 inch peace of garlic seaweed each day(not sure if it's nori.)
And the Sailfin is about one and a half inches long. Even so, the tank is probably too small for him, and definitely will be. I'm planning on getting a 125-185 tank for christmas. And I'm deciding between marine or reef. The tang is eating like a beast. Sometimes I wont see cysts, sometimes his body is covered in them. I'm not sure if he's healthy(as healthy as ich will allow) or if it's close. I spotted the first cysts about 4 weeks ago; about a week after I put him in.
The hawk isn't that big. I he's 3 1/2 inches as well. And he doesn't need much space. All he does is perch on my magnet cleaner and beg for food.

oh then that is definately fine! You could keep the tang in there for a few months as he is little

HUFA are highly unsaturated fatty acids and can be supplemented with the food. I personally love SELCON but have used vita-chem. What type of food are you feeding? Some foods like RODS contains these in there.

I personally would not do a FW dip on the fish! Good luck

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
Yep no dip. Especially if he is still eating. Dip is not going to solve any problems with ich, it may provide some tempory relief but far too stressful for tempory results.

Thanks for the help. :) I'm not sure exactly what kind of food it is. I'll look for the wrapper. Right now I'm just keeping the sheets in a ziplock baggy. Is it normal for an infected Sailfin to look pale? Last night I looked him over, and his stripes were a very light gray, almost blending in with the yellow. But tonight, his stripes were a rich dark brown, as they should be.

A buddy who owns a LFS, learns where a particular fish sleeps at night. He turns on the lights and removes any fish with his "hand." No net, with his hand. This is something he does on a regular basis when it comes to any fish within his 180 gallon display tank that a customer wants to purchase.

Um, dipping a fish for Ich then returning it to the same body of water will be completely uneffective in a few says. problem is the parasite is still in the water and will re-infect the fish. if you are dead set on dipping them, it is best to move them to a cycled QT tank. sad part is all of the fish in the tank have been exposed to the parasite.

Please do some reading on the parasite and not just treatments. otherwise, you are adding undue stress to your fish, and in the long run, asking for trouble IMO.

and 29 gallons?!?! YIKES that fish needs some space to swim. that tank is WAY too small for that fish.

My LFS is keeping their fish at 1.017 to avoid any ich... You can try to lower your salinity as well..
