Hello. So my girlfriend wants a kitten. And my first though is, oh man, this cats going to grow up and try to jump on top my aquarium and fall right in.

See, my aquarium is the tallest thing in the room. And in my experience cats love to get on tall things. So anyone have any cat proofing they have done to the top of their aquarium?

    Glen.

Will you have a hood on the tank? If not, just put some eggcrate (light diffuser) on top of the tank to keep kitty out.

I lost my fav fish to a kitty. I set up a tank for my more agressive fish, it was a domino damsel that was about 3"s around, and a 9" orange toadfish. The cat was standing on the back lip of the tank between the wall and light and was trying to catch the damsel while leaving the tip of its paw in the water (fishing so to speak). Well My toadfish thought it was lunch! My toadfish grabbed the cats paw, the cat freaked out, about knocked over my tank, and I didnt realize at first what had happened. The next day, we found toady on the floor, barely alive. He lived for a few more days, but wouldnt eat and his eyes had glazed over from being out of water.

I need to send that cat to amcarrig, she has a way with cats.....

Before my divorce we had 3 cats. One jumped into the 75gal take the day i was setting it up and overshot. Next thing you see is a soaking cat running through the house like it was on fire. Ever since then they never tired to jump on top again. I say if the tank is large enough they won't bother. But in a smaller tank it could seem like an easy catch. I guess you could compare the cats to some of the dwarf angle fish (some will cause a problem others wont) :)

Thanks guys. Where do i get eggcrate? I would rather not have a cat find his way into the tank.
