Thanks for all the input everyone, great to hear there are no repeat offenders, maybe I can teach her how to do a water change, hmmmm.

@grinder, oh boy that's sooo wrong but soo funny, the cat Police are going to be coming for ya (they are a sub dept of the Tang Police)!

Mojoe, as you stated, all cats are different . I have my 55 in my bedroom and the cat rarely goes in there. I have my (leg mounted) light fixture places directly in the center so she can't climb in. I havealso added a stool next to my tank. She will sit on it And peek in sometimes. But like you said, all are different. BTW, I was in our hottub one time when our cat jumped in. It got pretty crazy really fast. you just never know with felines. Best of luck my friend.

My cat is odd... he doesn't care one bit about my tank... he has tried to drink the water out of the sump before, and as soon as he found it was saltwater, had a very "this is nasty" look on his face, and never bothered it again...

He'll sit in my lap while I'm staring at my tank, and I try to get him to pay attention to the fish, but he doesn't seem to care at all.... he just wants to be petted. it's all about him.

I use to keep fish on a dresser along my bed. My cat use to sit on my bed with his face to the glass and loved to watch. Even when I wasn't near him, he never tried to get on top of it or get to the fish - he just loved watching them.

Is there anyway he can sit over the tank? I wouldn't think he could do anything bad if he can't get up there. If it's low enough I guess he could technically jump over and into it but after falling in it once, he wouldn't be trying that again.

thanks I'm feeling much better about this hearing everyone's experiences.

@Flaring Afro - unless she were to jump on top of my light, but that would be a balancing act, hopefully she won't attempt that one.

@Gabba - heck yeah cats are so vain, hehe

@Indiana Boy - cat in the hottub, oh lord I can't imagine :)

we have two cats. one we have had about 6 years. she used to be very interested in the fish in my 75 especially the Diamond Gobies. the white fish were always her favorite. in her years, she really lost interest in the fish and left the tank alone. I always had a hood, but I dont remember her ever getting on top, and it had a short stand.

we now have a 180 that is much taller and a kitten. He loves to sit on a stool and watch and harrass the fish, but they could care less about him. this tank also had a hood but it is about 6' tall total and he cannot jump up there.

My older cat doesn't even notice the tanks, one of my kittens doesn't notice the tanks either, and my other kitten loves to watch the fish in the 90 gallon and that's all with that tank. But she is verrrry interested in the currently open top fuge...I'm waiting for her to launch herself into it LOL

    LMAO!!!

With my first 3 tanks, I had 3 cats (and 2 dogs). They never really paid attention to any of them unless something caught their eye, then they'd look for a minute.

This time around, just have one cat left. Her only interest in the (currently empty & cycling) tank is the time we spend doing stuff to it. Apparently she's a tad jealous. She eyeballed the top of it one day (it's got a hood) from her cat tree perch, but once I asked her what she was doing she stopped & hasn't shown any more interest. She's definitely interested in the RO/DI water though, and one day she put her front feet up on the lidded sump to see just what exactly the deal was.

Your biggest issue with an open top will probably be cat hair floating around on the surface. That's what nets are for LOL.

One of my cats is an expert hunter when he goes outside. I even saw him chasing down a rabbit one night when I was walking my dogs. He doesn't show much interest in the tank now. Although, he did climb up on it a few times before. He also showed an intense interest in our canary.

I've found that keeping his food bowl constantly filled really helps. I think they may tend to hunt more if they are hungry.
