I just finished my refugium for the 75g. My LFS only caries grape caulerpa. I hear that caulerpa can be toxic when it turns sexual. What sort of draw backs are there for caulerpa. Would anyone recommend cheatomorpha instead?

Cheato is just about everyones first choice. It does a great job and you won't be disappointed.

I just added some caulerpa to my refugium and it is growing nicely. There are a lot of different species of caulerpa. I have heard that the grape veriety can be quite invasive.

Personally, I would stay away from it.

As long as you harvest the caulerpa regulary, you shouldn't have any problems with it going sexual. I have used grape caulerpa in my refugiums for years with no problems.

grape has a chemical that doesnt get along with alot of corals, doesnt extrude the elements enough that we dont desire. chaetomorpha extrudes extremely well and its chemical composition doesnt interfere with corals. chaetomorpha is a better choice than grape. another fine item is mangrove.

    Reef_Guru,

I believe that Mangrove is a big Magnesium user.

Knowing that I want the Magnesium in the tank, I opted to not use Mangrove so as not to have to add more magnesium.

true, which is why i suggested chaetomorpha. but the rewards of the mangroves are worth dosing Mg
