Wanted to know if I can get away with shaving the center brace on the stand? I need to take off a total of 1/4 so I would do 1/8" on each side(front and rear). Let me know what you guys think...

I take it this is one of those plastic top frame braces ?

how wide is it at present? never tried it so I am not sure

    but
if you do shave it and the tank bows as a result you say good bye to any garuantee that may be in place

I had one break some years back - snapped and the gap grew to about 1cm between the 2 halves which showed me just how much force these are protecting the seams from

If the brace is made of 2x4 or larger it would not effect it at all.;)

You could shave it but I would use a drmel and take only what you need and no more. A 55 does weigh alot so think about that and just try it and see what you get.

there is a reason they put the brace there, if you take it away you must reinforce the load elsewhere.

If its a prebuilt stand from a store you really shouldn't mess with it. They make those stands that way for a reason. Sure its only a little bit of shaving off of it but what if that makes it weak enough to snap. Some of these stands are built pretty sketchy. A pic would help.

That's true looks like I'll be leaving it alone. Time for a custom tank for my refugium. Thanks to all for the reply.
