Ok, ive serached this site as well as the rest of the web for an answer to this question. I currently have a 36" Oddysea light fixture over my 30G reef running a 96W 12k and 96w actinic. Im ready to make the move to T% but dont want to go through all the trouble of getting a new fixture and selling moy old one. Since I have a knack for DIY, I was wondering if I could do a retro fit and just replace the ballasts, bulbs, etc. on my current fixture to fit the T5's. Also, am I jumping the gun in wanting to upgrade my lighting? I currently have mostly zoas and polyps but would like to keep better looking corals. Let me know what wattage I should be moving up to on this set up also.

    Thank You

Look at Reef Geek for their retro fit kits for sizes. I think you will only be able to get a 2x39W kit in your current fixture. Unless it is real wide then maybe you could get 3 bulbs.
You would only need to replace the T5 bulbs once a year versus twice a year for the CF.
You mentioned having DIY skills, consider making your own hood and putting a 4X39W kit in it. Make sure you buy fans to blow accross the label end of the bulbs and your ballast(s). You will save energy costs with the T5 set up.
I would suggest a 4X39W kit. It will allow you to have just about anything as long as you place them properly in the tank.

Nothing wrong with DIY, but you need to check your budget. IT may be cheaper to just buy a 4 bulb T5 fixture then retrofit. you could always sell your CF unit online somewhere.. just my 2 cents.
