I think I did come to think of it... I believe it was related to an inquiry from inwall75.
I still am curious what the angle is on that.

    Doesn't hurt to test. ;)

I think the line of thought would be, with the extra flow going threw the cheato you might see some better export of nitrates?

    That makes sense.

Well I was at <10ppm on my last test a couple weeks back. I'll check it out asap. I am (over)due for a water change so there are some elements in play but it will be interesting to see.

    Ok... this is interesting.
Just did a nitrate test. The pink hue is gone... I am at 0 ppm.
That's without water changes in 4 weeks too. Hard to directly attribute it to this, but it is a positive development.

Nice!!! I just dropped in on this update and missed it when you started it. I think its a good idea. I also have this problem with my HOB CPR aquafuge. Chaeto is dense, catches all kind of crap, and is getting little to no flow through it. I wonder if i try this in my aquafuge, if the bubbles will make it into the DT. The Nitrate reading is very interesting. ;) I think you're on to something.

Isn't the idea of growing algae in the sump a positive thing no matter what type of algae?

    My thoughts on the subject.
1.) Any growth of algae in a sump takes nitrates and phosphates out of the water.
2.) Growing algae in the sump uses up all available phos and nitrates so your DT stays algae free.

Is the red alge causing any other issues other than slowing down the flow? IMHO I would just thin out the algae every time you do water change as needed.

Yes the red algae covers the top of the chaeto inhibiting growth a bit.
It is difficult to manually remove.
I am considering adding a clean up crew to the sump as it does get on the pump as well.

Look at my 2 week update post - the pump definitely helped with flow and may have contributed to a .1 increase in pH. It has not reduced the red algae.
