hello. i want to put some chaetomorpha algae in my sump to use up some nutrients in my system. should i worry about this algae spreading i.e getting sucked up the return and introduced into my main tank. i have heard this is a safe/non-aggressive algae is this true?

I use cheato in my sump and have had no issues. It will grow pretty quick. It stays clumped together pretty well. If you run a filter on your return pump you wont have any issues.
When the ball gets too large in my sump I take it out and break it up into sandwich bag size clumps and take it to the lfs for credit. I have also given lots away to people that come by and buy frags from me, kind of like a free bonus.
