Will my chaeto do better if I spread it apart. I'm thinking about more surface area/exposure to lighting.

You mean to split it into two parts?

I'd like to spread it apart instead of being a tight ball. (If it would better for growth).

I left my chaeto in a ball like what you have and it has steady growth, I dont think it matters too much. Flow was also mentioned that it should be tumbling but mine doesn't really move at all and not long ago I threw loads of it away (didn't have anyone to give it to!) as it pretty much filled my whole refugium!
Your lighting schedule may affect the growth, chaeto does require dark periods so if your lights are on in your sump all of the time then you may wish to change it.

By the way it looks like you've got a nice refugium there, cool pics.

Let nature take its course. The chaetto will be the size of a basketball in a few months.

Must chaeto be submerged or can it be used in a trickle filter?

That nice dark green color looks pretty healthy, I wouldn't mess with it for now
