    Hey everyone,
Is there any way of keep chaeto without having it in a sump or refuge; for example, in the DT.

there are severals way to do it..
first one that is to use a breeding cage, more like a very very fine breeding net, a good size one and keep it to the back left or right corner so it's not as visible.. or you can even use some aquascaping to cover it.
second way is to design something similar to a HOB refugium which needs no pump but needs lots of holes to let the water run through the "refugium" that you can keep chaeto, live rock rubble and live sand in.

I have mine in the DT and it does fine. It is stuck in between a big rock and the glass, and it has tripled in size. I don't have any fish that eat it.
