changing brands

    ive been buying trop marin salt for a while now but my friends store was out so he sold me a 200 gal box of instant ocean for 20 dollars no bucket comes in a box but i was wondering if it will cause a problem switching so quickly ?

    IME - No problem at all , you can use the I Ocean at the next water change

    you can even combine the 2 mixes, if for example you have a little Tropic left, but not enough for a full mix

    Nothing is wrong with using IO. You may have to supplement a little Magnesium, Calcium, and baking soda, depending on what parameters you like to keep.

    +K on that. Changing those params can lead to shock if it's not the same as what they are used to.

    $20 for 200g that is a steal

    i recently switched from IO to Coralife since the LFS only ordered that. i had a little IO left over so i added the rest to the bucket of Coralife and tried mixing it throughout with my hands

    I've heard a ton of horror stories of coral deaths from switching salt brands. I've always switched over gradually but adding 1/3 new type with 2/3 old. then 1/2 and 1/2 then 2/3 new and 1/3 old then finally all new. the alternative to this is do smaller water changes so that you so not impact the system all at once
