I am wanting to switch my refugium under my tall 150 gal tank. My tank is built into a wall and backs up to a closet. My stand has 2x4 studs every 16." When I set up my current refugium I slid it in one of the 16" openings in the middle and it is perpendicular to my main tank and sticks out the back into the closet.
I guess I could do that again, but I would really like it to sit directly under the DT and not have to have it be perpendicular and stick way out the back. Is it a disaster waiting to happen to think about removing a brace while the tank is full?
I know it's about 1200 pounds but I just saw a stand for a 4' 120 gal tank that only had posts in the corners. Mine has them in the corners and 2 more in the front span and 2 in the rear span. Plus all the wood in my frame is bigger then the 120s was.

Here is the back showing my refugium sticking out 6" or so and my skimmer hanging on. My new refugium is 6" langer, so it would stick out 12". My access is horrible to it so even pics are hard. That's a big reason I'd like to get it to sit under the tank. Since it has to hang out I had to build a platform to raise it up 5 inches so it would go over the bottom of the frame of my stand. If it was totally under my DT I'd have another 5" of access and plumbing would be easier too.

    The pics aren't staying up.
I think what I'll do is install cross braces going in each direction from the vertical 2x4 I'm wanting to remove. Then use a sharp hand saw (to minimize vibrations) and cut out the vertical support. I'm planning on doing it either this weekend or next. I'll post an update to celebrate (hopefully)

It's done and it went well. I was expecting the stand to be made of pine but it was a much harder wood then that. I ended up using a saws all to cut the brace out. I had to shave a chunk off a front brace to squeeze the new refugium in.

I'm excited tom see the difference. Especially going from a coralife 125 gallon HOB skimmer to a trigger bursa 300 gallon in sump skimmer!
It was way over due if I ever wanted to stock my 150 gal tank
