For my entire reefing career, I've used straight up Instant Ocean and never really thought twice about it. After kicking around on the salt forum, I'm wondering if it would benefit my tank to change my salt. Are there any salts that are really tops, or is it more of a preference thing? Any that people would recommend? Can I even just change salts randomly and have no problems with the tank?

I have changed salts a few times without any problems. As for what to use, I asked a similar question a while back. Here is the link: What Sort of Salt Do You Use

One of these days I would like to try the E.S.V. B-ionic salt

I have changed from Reef Crystal to Tropic Marin and then later changed to Red Sea Coral Pro ( old formula, not got the new one here yet)

did not notice any issues, but I was only doing 5% weekly water changes, so its not a large amount of new / different water coming into the tank at any 1 time

I just read about the new Red Sea Coral Pro salt. I may go ahead and switch to that, especially because I am admittedly not very good about dosing trace elements and things like that, so a salt that covered those parameters better would do nicely for me.

I've always used Instant Ocean and never had a problem with it. I guess salt mixes are like tires...there are many different treads, widths, and heights, but they all get you to where you want to go.

this is the same reason I went from old red sea to IO reef crystals... didn't have to think about trace elements

I changed 5gallons a week in a 55 set up with nothing weird happening
