+1 When you trim the calurpa, just grab a handful and yank. No need to get the scissors out or anything.

LOL I read the fuge threads and I just smile , I never drink anything while reading . I set up mu firest Fuge in 1980 or 82 ? I used simple Caulerpa algae it was the feather type who's Latin name escapes me right now But I went with Grape and several other specices after that time an looking for the most effective I could find . Ended up using the Grape and fetahers type 100% Cheado is way way over rated IMO.. I don's like to move the water that fast .

Then for many yrs it was a simple refugium/saltwater swamp and it was like pulling teeth to get anyone to try a refugium but as it caught one it was fine
But then about the mid to late 1990's I started the see the smart guys who thought they where going to show the world they started to light their grasses 27/7 and thats when the rumour of toxins got started .. Rather then admit they made a serious mistake and over though a simple soloution to a simple issue . I have had and given away bags of off spring of my origional seeding stock for 30 yrs ago its never gone sexaul and its never harmed or tweaked a SPS coral .

If you run a fuge you have to use Carbon and you have to give it a sleep or waste release period in the 24 hr cycle.. Photosynthesis is the process of converting light energy to chemical energy and storing it in the bonds of sugar. This process occurs in plants and some algae . Plants need only light energy, CO2, and H2O to make sugar. The process of photosynthesis takes place in the chloroplasts, specifically using chlorophyll, the green pigment involved in photosynthesis

They simply need light and dark to contiune their entire life cycle and can not run 24/7 This was about the time I started to see the smart guys loosing their corals and algaes and entire tanks infact..

As for the Cheado you can have ot never found it near as effective as the leafy plants less surface area I guess to trap light and to convert the flight energy to chemical energy and storing it in the bonds of sugar and carbons .

Strange thing happened to the fuge. The Calerpa disappeared!? I mean it's just gone. Well, to look back at the events that may have caused this phenomenal occurrence I will walk you through the stream of endless possibilities. First, was the changing from 24/7 to reverse lighting. Then I had an accident and my pc light fell in the fuge. Then I rigged up a clamp on light with a 6500K flood light. So in the fuge still remains the cheato and some red slime algae and some green hair algae. My nitrates are at 15 and my Phosphates are 0. What do you think of that???? Crazy huh! But true!
The first picture is what the fuge looked like before the incident the other 3 pics are now. Anybody have an answer?

I would say your refuge is finally starting to work, it took almost 5 months before mine kicked in and the algae started to decline. The reason the cal probably is gone because there wasn't enough of it to get a hold in the refuge. other algae to compete with.
of coarse I could be wrong.

Do you have anything in the fuge that eats the Calurpa? You would normally see it dying off slowly otherwise or at the very least you should see the stalks.. odd duck.

Get more agae of one type or another and good luck. I use a CFL spotlight on mine and the chaeto is growing great. So are the few strands of grape calurpa that snuck in. I dont have any sand in my fuge though so nothing other than the floor and walls for it to stick to.

I never saw the calerpa die off I just saw it disappear. Well, I went to my lfs and they had some cheato and it probably would be good to replenish my supply so I bought it. I also picked up a beautiful long tenecle Aneneme. The tank is looking great and the fuge is too. Anyway here are some up-to-date photos.
