cheato question

I just set up my refuge about a month ago and the cheato is growing like wildfire. I was just wondering though if the cheato absorbs all the nitrates and phospahtes to ultimately beat out nusiance algae, will it essentially beat out coraline algae??

It will help the coraline.

 

No, coraline is fed by magnesium, calcium, and proper alkalinity. Actually, the complete opposite can happen, as both nitrates and phosphates, which the chaeto uses, inhibit coraline growth.

 

the cheato should beat out nusiance algae provided proper lighting.
i think coraline has a little different requirements then other algaes, much like corals. so i dont really think it will impact coraline algae to much. but trust me if it does its a good thing, coraline, no matter how pretty, is still a nusiance algae when it takes off.

 

Yep. After mine all died off (coraline) about a month ago. Its coming back in full force now. Ive got red, purple, blue, green and possibly some orange. Yes it is pretty. I think once its on the glass tho its ganna be annoying..

I wish my cheato would grow that fast, it dosent seem to be growing very quick. Im using the 6500K spiral flourescent from lowes. What are you using?

ok im useing a nove t5 ho 39watt with these two bulbs, 10K/Freshwater would those work to grow cheato?? it was growing plants on my freshwater tank.
