    well Tony

the sponges are not a bad thing, they are filter feeders ( so your power head is now also an internal filter)

    how big is the tank?
    what are your nitrate levels?
    what are you Phosphate levels?
what else is in the tank aside from the 2 fish you mention?

to be honest I have seen a lot worse algae issues in tanks of 6 months of age
but its probably a parameter issues, possibly caused by overload (cant know that until we know how big it is and whats in there)

    Hi Tony

if it where my tank, I would add Purigen (it will reduce your nitrates) and GFO or Phosguard (phosphate remover) to my filtration system - as these will remove the nutrients that are feeding your algaes

irrespective of Phosphate test results I always use the remover to prevent algae occuring
so dont worry about having the test kit or not (if you ever move to corals, the kit would be beneficial)

if you add those 2 chemical filter media to your filtration system you should IMO see a decline in the algae

water changes become critical as decaying algae needs to be syphoned out
